Introduction Hildebrand Parameters and Basic Polymer Solution Thermodynamics Hansen Solubility Parameters Methods and Problems in the Determination of Partial Solubility Parameters Calculation of the Dispersion Solubility Parameter, δD Calculation of the Polar Solubility Parameter, δP Calculation of the Hydrogen Bonding Solubility Parameter, δH Supplementary Calculations and Procedures Temperature Dependence Some Special Effects Temperature Changes Effects of Solvent Molecular Size Computer Programs Hansen Solubility Parameters for Water Conclusion References ABSTRACT Solubility parameters have found their greatest use in the coatings industry to aid in the selection of solvents. They are used in other industries, however, to predict compatibility of polymers, chemical resistance, and permeation rates and even to characterize the surfaces of pigments, fibers, and fillers. Liquids with similar solubility parameters will be miscible, and polymers will dissolve in solvents whose solubility parameters are not too different from their own. The basic principle has been “like dissolves like.” More recently, this has been modified to “like seeks like,” since many surface characterizations have also been made and surfaces do not (usually) dissolve. Solubility parameters help put numbers into this simple qualitative idea. This chapter describes the tools commonly used in Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) studies. These include liquids used as energy probes and computer programs to process data. The goal is to arrive at the HSP for interesting materials either by calculation or, if necessary, by experiment and preferably with agreement between the two.Solubility parameters have found their greatest use in the coatings industry to aid in the selection of solvents. Hansen solubility parameters: A quick review in pharmaceutical aspect

This review is spotlighting the Hansen solubility parameters theory throughout seven decades of continuous development, especially in pharmaceutical field. Many applications in both pharmaceutical industry and administration are found, and the door of research is wide opened.

Organogel formation rationalized by Hansen solubility parameters.

Some organic compounds gelate particular solvents by forming a network of anisotropic fibres. We show that Hansen solubility parameters can be used to predict the range of solvents that are likely to be gelled by any given gelator.

Partial solubility parameters of lactose, mannitol and saccharose using the modified extended Hansen method and evaporation light scattering detection.

The modified extended Hansen method was tested for the first time to determine partial solubility parameters of non-polymeric pharmaceutical excipients. The method was formerly tested with drug molecules, and is based upon a regression analysis of the logarithm of the mole fraction solubility of the solute against the partial solubility parameters of a series of solvents of different chemical c...

Organogel formation rationalized by Hansen solubility parameters: influence of gelator structure.

Some organic compounds form gels in liquids by forming a network of anisotropic fibres. Based on extensive solubility tests of four gelators of similar structures, and on Hansen solubility parameter formalism, we have probed the quantitative effect of a structural variation of the gelator structure on its gel formation ability. Increasing the length of an alkyl group of the gelator obviously re...

Hildebrand and Hansen solubility parameters from molecular dynamics with applications to electronic nose polymer sensors.

We introduce the Cohesive Energy Density (CED) method, a multiple sampling Molecular Dynamics computer simulation procedure that may offer higher consistency in the estimation of Hildebrand and Hansen solubility parameters. The use of a multiple sampling technique, combined with a simple but consistent molecular force field and quantum mechanically determined atomic charges, allows for the prec...
